Five-Year-Olds Pilot Their Own Project-Based Learning | Edutopia

  1. Ok I found the school that I want to work at. The way that they teach these children and at such a young age. I really think they have got the right idea! Plus the teachers were all wearing jeans. The focus is student-centered learing, they are collaberating and above all they are learning life long skills and they are excited about it. This is what teaching is all about. I hope I am lucky enough to work at a school like this when I recieve my B-K degree.

  2. Carrie:
Thanks for posting this wonderful example of 21st century pedagogy. Edutopia is a great resource. It is funded by the George Lucas (as in Star Wars) Foundation.

How would you go about finding such a school--or changing the environment at the school that you currently work in?

  3. I am with you on wanting to work in a school as this one. I love how they focused on the children being lifelong learners, not just memorizing information. I also liked how the one teach took the children outside to learn, I think children learn from other ways than just inside sitting at a desk. You can tell from the video that this community cares about the future of their children.

  4. I would love to do something like this, but I am afraid to step out of my comfort zone. It is very important for us to try reaching out to these type of children because we are advocates for education. It is wouderful that you (Carrie) are tring to reach out to those families.

  5. This is how to learn! I loved the "After Action Review" the kids were interactive with when asked questions. When they said "Many 5 year olds will not spell the words correctly and many 35 years olds may use spell checker" I felt like they were talking to me. Spelling can be bi-product of Learning Across the Curriculum.

"It is funded by the George Lucas (as in Star Wars) Foundation" YEAH!!!!!! ... Where are the Padawans Lightsabers?

  6. Butch,
I work in the classroom and it is crazy to me the things that most teachers focus on and that they think are so important. For example, I work with 1st grade and a lot of teacher is so focused on them knowing how to spell the words and sentence mechanics that they miss the entire skill......writing, being creative, and getting a good idea down on paper and being excited about it. Once they have reached that then by all means work on spelling and grammar. It just kills me to watch this happening, but I am the assistant so I feel like I am in a though spot. This is why I want to be "the teacher."

  7. Gayla S Keesee,
I told my husband that we had to move to Alabama, he didn't quite agree. I guess rather than find a school like this I would like to help mold a school to be like this one. Assistants do not hold much opinion or at least not at my school. So I think my first obstacle is to finish my degree. Second I would need to find an administrator who feels the same way and go from there. It is hard because it does not seem to be the way in this county. I am not sure why. It is about following the teacher’s manuals and most teachers are terrified to steer from that. It really is hindering the student’s education if the teachers are not willing to go out on a limb and to explore. For the most part if you can justify what you are doing in the classroom you will be just fine, if they could just get past what will the administration think and do what is best for there students.

  8. @CarrieYou might check out the concept of Whole Language learning which developed in the late 1970s. Here's the link to Wikipedia's article

  9. Carrie, I'm a little confused about your being suprised by teachers focusing on spelling and sentence mechanics. These are necessary in writing. Yes, we do want them to be creative and be able to put ideas in words, but if the sentence is put together incorrectly and mis-spelled, how will anyone be able to read it?

  10. I love your posting. This is a prime example of children taking their imagination to the next level. This is children being really creative. I would love to seat in while the teacher is teaching and the children using the imagination
